Interview with Vicente Gutierrez for Shift Art Magazine (Tokyo/Japan): the contextualisation of my contribution to the Atomic Sunshine exhibit

Excerpt : I guess I was following Henri Michaux, as well as the reading of two books: Monolingualism of the Other by Jacques Derrida (1998) and Abdelkebir Khatibi's Amour Bilingue (Love in Two Languages, 1983). I decided I needed to lose my mother tongue into a non-European language, and I had heard that Japanese was among the hardest. I was also interested in Japan because of its animistic link to Africa, I feel these are the two only regions in the world that are Animistic. Tokyo is the only city where Animism meets Technology and Modernity since all other cities with Animistic ties outside of Japan are situated in the developing world. Having grown up in Africa, I had an eye for seeing this in action (...) (more...)
Essay / Contribution to Art Space Tokyo (english - 2008): a personal guide book to the Tokyo art scene (ISBN: 978-09741995-5-9)
Read the text in English here : www.transcri.be/text/artspacetokyoessay.pdf (English - 2007)
Excerpt : The cheer size, ludic fluidity and digital dystopic pace of Tokyo as a social and urban environment, described by Félix Guattari as "Intériorités extranéisées" along the lines of Abe Kōbō's Ruined Map, is for me in contradiction with the art scene it hosts, which undoubtedly lacks the uncompromising refinement and poetic vigour of a certain past. The modern Japanese culture and this city in particular I personally compare to a black hole for it entered modernity with a gigantic explosion before collapsing into a fascinating fast-spinning bulimic invisible urban gravity that eats and process its surrounding realities: time, memory, cultural behaviours, TV programs, languages, fashion habits, architecture, etc. Moreover, it does so in accordance with its animistic background (...) Interview with Marleen Wynants for Janus Art Magazine (Brussels/Belgium): the use of site specific environments & the notion of "ephemeral"
Read the text here : www.transcri.be/text/interview_Marleen_Wynants_2008.pdf (English - 2008)
Excerpt : Is acceptance by society for you a reason to move on with your work to an area where it isn't? What is the role or the interplay between private and public space for you? What's the relevance of an exhibition space? Or do they all merge? What is your relation towards time? How does your work relate itself to time? It is a sign of the time? Of a very specific here and now - opposed to the global standardization of place and time? What's the role of a gallery? Of a museum? What would the perfect museum be like? A lot of your work is gone or disappears right after or even during the performance: can we still talk about an original here? Was there ever an original? Or only an original? (more...)
Interview with Jan Van Woensel for Lokaal01 & PILOT:3 (Holland/Italy): contemporary artists and nomadism
Read the text here : www.transcri.be/text/interview_Jan_Van_Woensel_2007.pdf (English - 2007)
Excerpt : How did you first started to travel around? When, and why, did you move from Brussels to Tokyo? Did you travel to Tokyo before or did you just go and stayed there? What is your interest in the elsewhere? Do you often go to artist-in-residency places to make new works? How do you adapt to all these new environments? Do you find that they are only superficial or do you feel that they really encourage a commitment with the local environment, the people, the community, the social situation? (more...)
Carte du Tendre - Laurent Courtens (Belgium)
Essay for fluxnews art magazine
Read the text here : www.transcri.be/text/articlecourtenseflux.pdf (French - 2009)
(more...)

Essay for L'Art Même art magazine
Read the text here : www.transcri.be/text/articlecourtens.pdf (French - 2008)
(more...)

Abreation in Alexandria - Joseph Badtke-Berkow (Egypt/Japan)
Read the text here : www.transcri.be/text/Abreaction_in_Alexandria.pdf (English - 2005)
Excerpt : Eric Van Hove chalks poetry on the broken streets of Alexandria's Turkish district as curious onlookers gather around. Hunched over with a fistful of fresh sticks of cyan colored chalk he writes in French about love, time, death, shadows, sun, dirt, hunger. It is difficult to accurately describe the effect he has on the people who bare witness to a scene they have come across some random Tuesday afternoon in April, but there are a few general categories we might venture to describe.
